The Cat Doctor celebrates 35 years
This year The Cat Doctor celebrates thirty five years of providing veterinary health care devoted to cats. Opened in 1987 by Robert Carlson DVM, The Cat Doctor in Bedford, MA was the eighth feline only practice in the United States and the first feline practice in a suburban location.
Thirty five years ago, single species practices were still a new concept in veterinary medicine. Cats were generally considered to be the medical equivalent of small dogs and veterinarians were regarded as the ultimate Jacks of all trade applying similar principals of medicine to a broad cross-section of species. But cats are not comfortable with other species and they have unique medical and social needs.
Traditionally, a trip to a small animal veterinary clinic was, and often still is, very stressful for cats. The subtleties of feline disease are often masked by the nerve-racking sights and sounds of dogs barking or sniffing around the waiting room. After working with both dogs and cats for 10 years, Dr. Carlson decided a higher caliber of care could be maintained by focusing on cats only.
In addition to providing the calm, quiet environment that can be crucial to the diagnosis and treatment of cats, The Cat Doctor offices are also equipped with the latest technology: Laser, X-ray, ultrasound, labs, etc. The Cat Doctor veterinarians attend educational seminars focused on feline medicine only. This specialized education allows them to keep pace with the most current medical and behavioral information and techniques for the successful treatment of cats.
In 2006 The Cat Doctor opened a second office in Nashua, NH. This office is staffed by the same group of caring professionals that have learned about compassionate feline care through 20 years of experience.
